Do you need vitamin C? When do you use it? What does it do for your skin? Why does your skin and body need Vitamin C?
We know Vitamin C and its sources but what is the secret to Vitamin C in natural skin care? Why we can’t help but fall In love with Vitamin C in skin care?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that is not only good for us internally, but also externally, with our skin. There are many forms of vitamin C used in anti-aging formulas, including L-ascorbic acid, ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate or sodium ascorbyl phosphate.
As an antioxidant, vitamin C fights off free radicals and protects the skin from the damage that they can inflict. It has also been shown to reduce and/or even reverse damage caused by UV exposure, lightening or eliminating the appearance of age spots (also called hyperpigmentation, photo damage or sun spots) on the skin.
When applied topically, vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis. Collagen is the skin’s foundation and support structure and works in partnership with elastin to plump up the skin tone and increase elasticity.
Increased collagen leads to firmer, toned and tighter healthier looking skin. Using products with vitamin C has been shown to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (due to more collagen in the skin) and even prevention of the formation of these troublesome lines.
Dermatologists are some of the biggest cheerleaders for the use of vitamin C in skin care routines, as many state that vitamin C increases the effectiveness of the treatments they provide in their offices, such as microdermabrasion or skin peels.
Many will recommend using a vitamin C serum daily to maximize the benefits of this powerful vitamin. Vitamin C has also been shown to work in partnership with vitamin E to boost a products’ sun protection factor (SPF), so you’ll often see these two antioxidants combined in skin care products.
Vitamin C is fairly common in skin care products today, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not an ingredient of which to take notice. You can find Vitamin C in our Ageless Perfection Cream.
