Rosehip seed oil, also known as Rosa Mosqueta, is cold pressed from the seeds of wild rose bushes native to the Andes mountains region in Chile. The fruit or ‘hip’ of the plan bears a tiny seed that is pressed into rosehip seed oil. The resulting oil is an amber color that has a slightly nutty scent. Rosehip seed oil is considered a ‘dry’ oil, meaning that it absorbs into the skin quickly and easily, without leaving any greasy residue.

Rosehip seed oil is unique due to its high levels of essential fatty acids. Our bodies cannot reproduce these fatty acids, so we must obtain the benefits by topical application. Rosehip seeds are 77% fatty acids. The largest concentration of fatty acids in rosehip seeds is gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which has been proven to reduce fine lines and combat the drying effects of UV exposure and environmental pollutants. The essential fatty acids absorb through the skin, where they are converted to prostaglandins, which help regenerate tissue and boost skins’ elasticity.

Rosehip seed oil is considered an antioxidant powerhouse, as it contains very high levels of vitamin C and lycopene, both of which are renowned for their antioxidant properties. They work to prevent premature aging and even reverse damage that has been caused by UV exposure. Vitamin C also stimulates the production of collagen, which is important to keeping skin supported and firm from the inside out.

Vitamin A is also plentiful in Rosehip seed oil. This vitamin helps to increase cell turnover and generate new skin cells, which also helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles as it prevents the advancement of new wrinkles. Instead, vitamin A helps skin to regain a vibrant, healthy appearance with an even skin tone.

Rosehip seed oil also has astringent properties that help to clarify and tone skin, and also diuretic properties, which help to reduce puffiness, particularly underneath the eyes. Its abilities to penetrate deep into the skin and dramatically improve hydration levels round out the reasons why those with aging skin clamor to use products that contain Rosehip seed oil. From dryness to wrinkles to age spots and sagging, this ‘miracle oil’ as it’s been called, can help them all.
